This scrappy quilt is the perfect project to complete over a length of time and to use up small pieces from your fabric stash. A new block will be presented each month (12 months) right here on The Country Register website with finishing directions to be supplies with the last block. By the end of the year's time, you’ll have a completed quilt just right for using in your home or giving as a gift. Use the photo (at left) to help you decide on fabric selections. Have fun making this cozy country quilt!

Block #1 • House Block

The fabric requirements for one block are listed with the instructions for each of the different blocks, so be sure to check the number of blocks required by the pattern before you start. Since this is a scrap quilt, you can choose to use different fabric combinations for each block you make or you may want to make multiples of each combination. Most of all, be sure to have fun with this quilt—it is time to play with fabric combinations and add a touch of whimsy to your work! Read all instructions before beginning and use ¼”—wide seams throughout. Read Cutting Strips & Pieces  prior to cutting fabric.

Fabric Requirements
Cut the following for each of six blocks:

Fabric A (Medium)
•Two 3 1/2” squares
•One 1 1/2” x 8 1/2” piece
•One 1 1/2” x 4 1/2” piece
•Two 1 1/2” squares

Fabric B (Blue or Gray)
Two 2 1/2” squares
One 1 1/2” x 5 1/2” piece
One 1 1/2” x 2 1/2” piece

Fabric C (Dark Medium)
One 2 1/2” x 8 1/2” piece

Fabric D (Dark)
One 2 1/2” x 3 1/2” piece

Fabric E (Dark)
Two 1 1/2” squares

Fabric F (Dark)
One 1 1/2” square


Making the Blocks

Make a total of six blocks. NOTE: This pattern uses “Quick Corner Triangles”. Please read directions for this technique before starting.

1) Refer to Quick Corner Triangle directions. For each block, sew two 2 1/2” Fabric B squares to one 8 1/2” x 2 1/2” Fabric C piece. Press.
2) Using 1/4” seams, sew one 1 1/2” x 5 1/2” Fabric B piece, one 1 1/2” Fabric F square, and one 2 1/2” x 1 1/2” Fabric B piece together as shown. Press.
3) Sew two 1 1/2” Fabric A squares, two 1 1/2” Fabric E squares, and one 4 1/2” x 1 1/2” Fabric A piece together as shown. Press.
4) Sew one 2 1/2” x 3 1/2” Fabric D piece between two 3 1/2” Fabric A squares. Press.
5) Sew one 8 1/2” x 1 1/2” Fabric A piece and units from steps 1 to 4 together in order shown. Press. House block will now measure 8 1/2” square.
